How to Make Liquid Laundry Detergent According to Money Talks News, the average person can save up to 90% by making their own laundry detergent. Store bought laundry detergent costs an average of 20 cents a load or more. Making your own laundry detergent only costs around 2 cents a load. That alone is an incredible savings! Another downside to store bought brands of laundry detergent is that they tend not to work as well as homemade laundry detergent. They are also loaded down with heavy perfumes and other toxins more so than cleaning agents.
Instructions
Step 1 Using a grater and 1/3 bar of soap, grate the soap into fine shavings directly into a large pot. The finer the shaving the quicker and easier it melts. Step 2 Now add 6 cups of water to the large pot and heat until the soap shavings are completely melted, stirring frequently. Step 3 Once the soap shavings are completely melted, add 1/2 cup of washing soda and 1/2 cup of borax. Step 4 Continuously stir the washing soda and borax until completely dissolved. Then remove from heat. Step 5 Add 4 cups of hot water to your 2 gallon bucket. Hot tap water works just fine. Step 6 Now add your melted soap mixture to the bucket and stir well. Step 7 Next, add 1 gallon plus 6 cups of water to your bucket and stir again. Step 8 Now is the time to add any essential oils if you choose to. Most people prefer lavendar or orange, but it more about personal preference. Also note that essential oils are not necessary to clean your laundry. Step 9 Wait 24 hours for the liquid laundry detergent to gel. Then you will only need to use 1/2 cup per load of laundry.
